A traditionthat still survives
I was 15 years old when I started working in Nabatieh my village
town, south of Lebanon.
With a good eye, and hard
work, taking advantage unfairly by my employer, I had to make it on my own. After 5 to 6
years, I had to leave to the city because of the war. At this
time, I was around twenty years old. I opened my own workshop.
Almost a year later I was put in touch with a woman designer
working for "L’Artisan du Liban".
That was my first big step to be known for my work in "Brass".
Starting with mirrors, now I deliver big hanging lamps, to cooking pans all engraved by hand.
Now I have workers with me, we all work with our own hands. We buy
sheets of yellow brass and with special scissors we cut the
design. We heat some of the items to curve them with a “burin
tool” and with a hammer we engrave the ornaments and the
writings.
It takes a lot of patience, finesse and hard work to have the best result.
